Praise be to Allah. If a person commits major and minor sins, it is still possible for him to be admitted to Paradise without being brought to account, if he repents and turns back to Allah. Allah, may He be exalted, turns the bad deeds of the one who repents to good deeds, even if he committed shirk, murder and zina, as He says (interpretation of the meaning): “ And those who do not invoke with Allah another deity or kill the soul which Allah has forbidden [to be killed], except by right, and do not commit unlawful sexual intercourse. Multiplied for him is the punishment on the Day of Resurrection, and he will abide therein humiliated - Except for those who repent, believe and do righteous work. Firstly: The piece of gold that you took is collateral or a security deposit, and there is nothing wrong with stipulating collateral when giving a loan, because Allah, may He be exalted, says (interpretation of the meaning):  “ then a security deposit [should be] taken ” [al-Baqarah 2:283] . Secondly: The collateral or security deposit is a trust (amaanah) given to the one who requests it, and he is not liable unless he willfully damages it or is negligent. Negligence includes failing to keep it in an appropriate place. Ibn Qudaamah (may Allah have mercy on him) said: But if the one who is keeping the collateral willfully damages the collateral or is negligent about keeping it in a safe place, and that leads to it being damaged or destroyed, then he is liable. Praise be to Allaah. It is not right for a Muslim to choose the easiest opinion, because in this way he will get out of the obligations of sharee’ah, or most of them, because in most matters – apart from the basic principles of Islam – there are differences of opinion. In the past, they used to say that the one who follows the rukhsah (dispensation, easy option) has become a heretic. It is obligatory to choose the scholarly opinion which is most correct according to the daleel (evidence), if one is qualified to examine and weigh up the matter. If a person is not qualified, then he has to follow the scholar who he thinks is most trustworthy in terms of knowledge, commitment to Islam and taqwa.
