Answer of IELTS Question: Do you work or study?

For IELTS Speaking Part 1, "Do you work or study?" is one of the most common opening questions.

Your answer should be 2-4 sentences: directly answer, add 1-2 details, and maybe how you feel about it.

Here are natural sample answers you can adapt:

*If you work:*
*- Simple version*: I currently work as a software engineer at a tech company here in Mumbai. I’ve been doing this for about 3 years now and I really enjoy the problem-solving part of my job.
*- With more detail*: I work full-time as a marketing executive for a consumer goods company. My main responsibilities include running social media campaigns and analyzing market trends. It’s quite fast-paced but I find it rewarding.

*If you study:*
*- Simple version*: Right now I’m a university student. I’m in my final year studying Computer Science at Mumbai University. I’ll graduate next year.
*- With more detail*: I’m studying medicine at Grant Medical College. It’s extremely challenging and takes up most of my time, but becoming a doctor has been my dream since I was young, so it’s worth it.

*If you do both:*
I actually do both. I’m studying for my Master’s in Business Administration on weekends, and I work as an accountant during the week. It’s hectic sometimes, but I’m learning a lot from both.

*Key IELTS tips for this question:*
1. *Be specific*: Don’t just say "I work" - say what job and where.
2. *Add a feeling or opinion*: "I enjoy it because..." or "It’s challenging but..." scores higher than just facts.
3. *Use past/present tense correctly*: "I’ve been working..." or "I graduated last year and now I work..."
4. *Keep it natural*: Don’t memorize huge answers. Examiners want real conversation.
