Al-Hasan al-Basri [may Allāh have mercy on him] said:
“The foundation of evil lies in three:
➊ Envy.
➋ Covetousness.
➌ Loving the ephemeral and lowly aspects of the worldly-Life.
And its subsidiary branches are six:
➊ Love of excess sleep.
➋ Love of over filling oneself with food.
➌ Love of being too relaxed.
➍ Love of leadership.
➎ Love of being praised.
➏ Love of boasting [being haughty].”
