What is condolences?
Offering condolences means comforting the one who has been stricken by calamity and assuaging his grief. The best way to offer condolences is that which is proven from the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him), that when a messenger came from one of his daughters asking him to come to her son who was dying, the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: “Go back to her and tell her that to Allah belongs what He has taken, and to Him belongs what He has given, and everything has an appointed time with Him. So tell her to be patient and seek reward with Allah.” Narrated by al-Bukhaari (1204).
